Walking the Gendarme Path with your dog
4 nights – Experience all 84 km of the well-known Gendarmstien hiking route with your four-legged friend. In this package we’ve put together overnight accommodation at which your dog is also welcome, so you can enjoy one of Denmark’s most picturesque hiking routes together.
Gendarmstien offers scenic attractions whatever the time of year, whilst each section of the path has its own story to tell. The full route is divided into 5 stages: Mountain, Brick, Crow, Beach and Mill. It doesn’t matter whether you’re most interested in history, nature or wildlife; the route has it all.
On this trip you walk between 17 and 23 km per day. There are many opportunities to take a break and enjoy the beautiful surroundings on each stage.
Itinerary:
Day 1
On arrival in Sønderborg, you’ll be staying at Hotel 6400, which is a relatively new hotel not far from Gendarmstien. Check-in is from 3.00 p.m.
The hotel is within walking distance of the town of Sønderborg, which you can visit on this first day and eat your evening meal. At the hotel, you’ll receive a welcome package that includes a map and a guidebook containing details of the hiking route.
Day 2
After eating breakfast at the hotel, you can make your packed lunch. At 10.00 a.m. the driver will pick you up and drive you to Skovby or Høruphav, depending on how far you’re planning to walk. From here, you walk back to Sønderborg through woodland and open landscapes. Dinner can be eaten at one of the town’s many restaurants.
Day 3
Once again there’s breakfast at the hotel and a packed lunch for your trip. Drop off your baggage at reception and head off on the day’s stage from Sønderborg to Kragesand. En route you’ll pass the iconic windmill at Dybbøl Mølle, make your way through the redoubt and enjoy the lovely view of Vemmingbund. Remember to take a towel for you and your dog; if the weather’s good, you can go for a refreshing dip in the water.
When you reach Kragesand, the driver will pick you up and drive you to Benniksgaard Anneks, where you’ll be staying overnight. The driver has your baggage with him/her.
It isn’t possible to eat at Benniksgaard Anneks, but the hostel is just opposite Benniksgaard Hotel, which has a restaurant (Note that dogs aren’t permitted in the restaurant). Here dinner will be served - included in stay.
Day 4
Breakfast and make-your-own packed lunch at the hostel. At 10.00 a.m. the driver will collect you and drive you to Kragesand, where you ended your hike the day before. From here, you walk back to Benniksgaard Anneks. Dinner is again served at Benniksgaard Hotel.
Day 5
Eat breakfast, make a packed lunch and leave your baggage at reception before you set off on the final section of Gendarmstien. From Benniksgaard Anneks, you’ll be able to enjoy views of Flensborg Fjord throughout the day as you head towards Padborg. In Padborg you’ll be picked up by your driver, who once again has your baggage, and you’ll be driven back to Hotel 6400, where you originally parked your car.
You have the option of staying an extra night at Hotel 6400, but you can also choose to drive home.
As you can see from the itinerary, transport for you and your dog has been arranged every day. We can thus offer a hiking trip on Gendarmstien where you walk along the entire route and can stay overnight at venues where dogs are welcome. You’ll have a driver who’s happy to take your dog along and who knows both the local area and Gendarmstien very well. If you have a dedicated dog safety belt, you’re welcome to take it with you in the car. In addition to personal transport, your baggage will be transferred between the places at which you’ll be staying overnight.
