Guided tour of Schackenborg Castle
Book a guided tour at Schackenborg Castle and listen to a collection of fascinating stories recounted by one of our experienced guides and see the attractive buildings up close – from both the outside and from the inside.
When you step onto the castle square at Schackenborg Castle or wander through the castle’s attractive halls and rooms, you’ll be following in footsteps that go back a thousand years – and perhaps even further back.
Hear about the time that Møgeltønderhus, as the castle was originally called, was one of the bastions of the Danish Crown and Danish Church in the ongoing conflict with the Holstein counts. You can also look forward to the many stories detailing the construction of Schackenborg and the 11 generations of Schack that have lived at the castle – have you, for example, ever heard of Hans Schack II’s prosthetic arm made of silver or do you know which of the Schack wives was known as the Evil Countess?
In 1978, the castle was returned to the Danish royal family. The royal couple lived at the castle until 2014 and now use it as their second home. Schackenborg Castle lies at the end of the idyllic cobblestone street of Slotsgade in Møgeltønder. Don’t miss out on a chance to take a stroll along beautiful Slotsgade when you visit the castle.
Please be aware that a visit to the castle is not suitable for visitors who have walking difficulties, as there are no elevators at the castle, whilst access to the castle is via a courtyard laid with cobblestones.
We look forward to welcoming you to Møgeltønder on a guided tour.
