Cycling guide book: 3rd Stage of the Tour
Imagine racing down through the landscape hot on the heels of the Tour de France field on the third stage of the 2022 edition of the world’s greatest cycle race.
Unlike the Tour peloton, however, you have the chance to stop along the route and experience everything that the region has to offer. You can take a leisurely stroll through Denmark’s most attractive pedestrian precinct in Vejle and cycle at the home of the Viking kings in Jelling, where you can find Denmark’s “birth certificate.” Or how about a stop to experience Koldinghus, Jutland’s last royal castle? Then you can get back on your bike and imagine that you’re wearing the yellow jersey once more.
You’ll ride through many different types of scenery, experience Christiansfeld, a town with a unique architectonic building style, and continue into Sønderjylland. See the cathedral in Haderslev or local art at Brundlund Slot in Aabenraa.
You can visit the royal palace and kitchen garden in Gråsten, before heading towards the national icon of the windmill at Dybbøl Mølle, with the surrounding entrenchments that made up the battlefield in 1864. Heading downhill from Dybbøl towards Sønderborg, you cross the King Christian X’s bridge, which connects the island of Als with Jutland. You also have the chance to experience the history of the region at the castle in Sønderborg before you race over the finish line.
The world’s greatest cycle race has never started in Denmark before – and may well never do so again. You can follow in the wheel tracks of this historic sporting event and combine it with fantastic experiences on a perfect cycling holiday in the south of Denmark.
